Panda velká je jedním z nejznámějších vzácných zvířat. V přírodě žije již jen několik jedinců, ale v posledních letech bylo vyvinuto velké úsilí o záchranu tohoto krásného zvířete.
Jedním z poznávacích znaků pandy velké je něco, co na obou předních tlapách vypadá jako palec navíc. Ve skutečnosti jsou to prodloužené kosti zápěstí, zakryté tlustými polštářky.
Přestože pandy velké dokáží stát na svých zadních nohách, pohybují se vždy kolébavou chůzí po všech čtyřech. Jsou-li pronásledovány, nemotorně klušou, ale za krátkou dobu se unaví.
Umí velmi dobře šplhat a často vylézají do spodních větví stromů, aby se najedly, odpočinuly si nebo unikly před nebezpečím.
Bambusové listy, stonky a výhonky jsou hlavními částmi pandího jídelníčku. Dospělá panda velká potřebuje 10-20 kg bambusu denně – a snědla by i víc, kdyby mohla. Kromě bambusu žere panda také ostatní rostliny jako trávu, květiny, houby, hlízy a kořeny nebo kůru stromů. Také pojídá některé drobné savce a ryby, které chytí, nebo zdechliny, které najde. A jako správný medvěd také vybírá med z včelích hnízd.
Novorozená panda je slepá a tak drobná, že ji matka celé 3 týdny téměř neustále drží v náručí. Zabarvení srsti je viditelné až po měsíci života.
